Pilate asked Jesus, “What is truth?”
And the truth was standing right in front of him.
What is truth? That same question needs to be asked today. There is so much “truth.” But, what is truth? Who’s truth is correct? Is it the Muslims, Christians, atheists, Evolutionists, Buddhists, Mormons, Jehovah’s Witnesses, Hindus? What is truth? That’s what Pilate asked. We must ask that same question because the truth is (pardon the pun) you are living by a set of standards that you consider truth.
Why do you brush your teeth? Because of the truth. The truth is simply…if you don’t brush your teeth, then they’ll rot out of your head. Why do you go to work? Truth: Fear. Fear that you’ll be broke if you don’t. Why do you take a shower. Truth. You don’t want people holding their nose as they talk to you. 🙂
What is it?
Jesus said He was the truth. Do you believe that? Do you believe He is the truth? If you do, then you will live by His words, found in the Bible, which you consider truth. Truth is (there I go again…with that pun)…truth is…most Christians don’t live by what they say they believe, (the Bible).
Let me give you an example. Christians say they believe in modesty. But just look at how we dress. Just call us bikini nation. Facebook is littered with Christian girls who are bikini-laden. So are we living by the truth of “not a hint of sexual immorality” (Eph 5:2). What about these little short-shorts and tight tops and skirts that are well…please don’t bend over in front of me. Do you know what I’ve come to believe is truth for many girls and women.
If you are skinny you can wear anything you want. You can wear tight shirts and you can wear skinny jeans showing every line of your body…you can wear skirts that are short (what’s short….ask a man). That’s right ladies, ask a man. Don’t ask another lady. Why? Because you don’t have any idea about what a man thinks when he sees a skirt that you think is appropriate. Truth is (sorry) most skirts that are above the knees are a temptation to a man. Just stating the truth here. Just ask another man or young man and I bet you that he’ll tell you the same thing.
Ladies, just because you are skinny, please don’t buy the wrong truth that it gives you a license to be immodest. Please. You are making it tough on us fellas. And please don’t get mad at me and send me hate mail. I’m just telling you the truth. Please don’t create a stumbling block for your brothers in Christ and certainly for the lost. And for those that choose to date…ladies…if you don’t respect your purity, young men certainly aren’t going to protect it.
Well, excuse me for a moment as I jump down off that soap box. So, I was meeting with the summer interns who’ve been helping me this summer yesterday and we were talking about truth and knowledge. By the way, here are some of the guys preparing our Lord’s Supper a couple Sundays ago.
That’s (nearest to us) Coleman Parrish, Kevin Cox and Caleb Triplett. Some of the greatest guys I know!
We discussed we are in a fight for the truth and correct knowledge. We talked about the fact that we all build our lives on some kind or sort of truth. As Christians we say the Bible is truth. Why? Because it is a book of fulfilled prophecies. No other “holy book” can boast as such. We know the Bible has stood the test of time as the most scrutinized book in the history of the world. And yet it stands on itself as truth.
We must stand for truth folks. We are wilting in our culture and we have for too long. Yet, I’m finally see a resurgence in the Christian community to stand for the truth and contend for the faith. Paul told young Timothy as much…
1 Timothy 6:20-21
20 O Timothy, guard the deposit entrusted to you. Avoid the irreverent babble and contradictions of what is falsely called “knowledge,” 21 for by professing it some have swerved from the faith. (emphasis mine)
Paul told Timothy in 2 Timothy 3:1-7
1 But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty. 2 For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3 heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good, 4 treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, 5 having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. Avoid such people. 6 For among them are those who creep into households and capture weak women, burdened with sins and led astray by various passions, 7 always learning and never able to arrive at a knowledge of the truth. (emphasis mine)
“Never able to arrive at a knowledge of the truth.” Wow! What a statement. You see, Satan is continually trying to deceive mankind with false knowledge. He did this with Eve in the garden. He convinced her that God was holding out on her. He deceived her. Yes. But, she deceived herself and so did Adam and then they played the “blame game” and took no responsibility for what they had done. Sounds like today doesn’t it?
What is truth? Truth is the Word of God.
16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness. 2 Timothy 3:16
Will you build your life on it? You will answer, “Yes.” But, are you building your life on the Bible plus other so-called “truth?” You know…be modest…except if you are skinny or have a good body and then you have a license to be immodest. Ouch. Did I go there again? The truth hurts though, doesn’t it. And the truth can set us free (Jesus’ words).
By the way…can I tell you the truth…here are three goofy people…(figuring we need a laugh about now)…Don’t kill me Pam, but Clara and I love this picture! 🙂
Laughing? Well…I hope you are at least smiling. I told you the truth…three goofy people, indeed.
Last thought on truth. Live it… this is what Paul told Timothy in some of his last words we have recorded in 2 Timothy 4:1-5
I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingdom: 2 preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching. 3 For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, 4 and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths. 5 As for you, always be sober-minded, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry. (Emphasis mine)
