I’ve enjoyed basketball since I was a kid. Let me show you…
Hey…I even had hair!! I played basketball in high school and we had a pretty good team! We won our league both my junior and senior year.
I had hair too!! Check out my “locks” in college. Can you pick me out?
I really loved basketball. Or should I say, I still love basketball. Honestly, I have to be careful that I don’t waste too much time with it. But, I sincerely enjoy the game. Last night I was reminded just how much! I went to watch my niece, Leah Church play basketball. She is a guard for the Surry County Homeschool team. Why Surry County and not Wilkes County? Well…it’s simple…we don’t have a team.
Leah is a wonderful talent. She is the defending Hoop Shoot National Champion for 10-11 year old girls. That’s right…I said NATIONAL CHAMPION. Here name will always be enshrined in the Basketball Hall of Fame as such. In fact, she began the process again in the Elks Hoop Shoot Free Throw Championship by nailing 23 out of 25 free throws today in our county hoop shoot competition earlier today. She’s amazing. In practice the other day she hit 142 out of 15o. Can you believe that? She’s “automatic!” Michael Jordan can’t even do that!!
Here’s Leah playing last night.
Do you notice anything? She’s awfully small… Yes she is. Why? Because she is a 12-year-old playing on a high school team. That’s right! She’s 12 years old playing against 16, 17 and some 18 year olds! And get this…she scored 26 points last night and led her team to the championship game of the Piedmont Invitational in Winston-Salem over Roanoke Valley Christian School out of Virginia. She nailed 3 three pointers. The look on the faces of the other teams and their coaches was like “who is that?” I must be careful here! I’m sounding like a proud uncle aren’t I? Lord forgive me!
Being in that gym sitting beside my father, (who was a better basketball player than me) was wonderful! The smell of the gym, the squeak of the tennis shoes, the sound of the buzzer from the score clock…yeah…it was fun! And do you know what was even better? At the end of the game both teams did something that was wonderful! It wasn’t just a few of the players or some of the players…it was ALL of the players!
I’m sorry the picture is so blurry. (It was from my phone…my batteries in my camera had died.) You get the point though. They were praying. After a very hard-fought game…the coaches and players came together and prayed. That’s really what it’s all about. Give glory to the Lord for all He’s done to give the ability and the skills to play. Those young ladies and their coaches did just that and so do I! Thank you Lord for a wonderful game that has brought much enjoyment (and continues to do so) to me and my family! Oh, by the way…the Heels won today too! Yep…that’s icing on the cake!!
