Just how old is the earth?
Have you thought about that lately? Maybe…maybe not. Well…whether you realize it or not…we are told every day how old the earth is…in a “round about” way. How? It’s when we hear the word “millions” or “billions” to describe the age of something on this earth. Whether it’s a news report like I heard yesterday that said scientists have found an organism that is using arsenic to replace phosphorus in its molecular structure (like it had a choice). These NASA scientists say that we can now “find ET.”
(Talking of course about the hit movie of years ago by the name “ET.”) Really? How do they know? The truth is that they don’t! They are guessing. Plain and simple.
You may say, “Boy, you sure are smug today Kevin.” I don’t mean to be, but I simply want to point out that the Bible says something entirely different. The Bible says in Genesis 1:1:
“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.”
You say, “Yeah, I know that already!” Well…look at the first sentence above again please. God created the heavens and “the earth.” Did you catch it? What? He created the heavens and “the earth.” God created the earth before He even created the sun, moon, planets and stars on day 4 (verses 14-19). Huh? Yep…that’s right. God created the earth uniquely and specially out of all of the universe. He created the earth to be the only place in the universe that could sustain life…the life of Adam and Eve, whom He created approximately 6,000 years ago (according to Bible chronology). The earth is unlike any other celestial, planetary entity in the universe. Why? Because God created the earth this way. By the way, “Father God” created the earth…NOT “Mother Nature.” I despise that term…”Mother Nature” because it’s so pagan.
The earth was created to “house” mankind, God’s most prized creation. And get this. God is going to come and live on this earth. Did you know that? You say, “What…are you nuts Kevin!” No, I’m not. The problem is that we just don’t read Scripture. We go off of the traditions of man and what we’ve been taught. Let me show you.
Take a look at Revelation 21:1-3 below:
1 Then I saw “a new heaven and a new earth,” for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. 2 I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. 3 And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God.
It’s right there in verse 2. The Holy City, the new Jerusalem that is 1,500 miles square (that has been prepared by Jesus…you remember…”I go and prepare a place for you…”) is going to come down “out of” heaven. Where is it coming? To EARTH!! See verse 3…God’s dwelling place is “NOW” among the people and he will dwell with them. Where? On the earth…the new…refurbished earth that has been refined by fire.
Read Revelation 21 and you will see that John talks about the Holy City. The Holy City is the New Jerusalem that will reside on the New Earth and is where the throne of God will be. Take a look at Revelation 22:1-2a:
1 Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, as clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb 2 down the middle of the great street of the city.
Do you see it? The river of the water of life is going to flow from the throne of God. And where is the throne located? In heaven? No. It’s in the city. Are you surprised? You shouldn’t be. Why? Because God’s desire, when He created the earth, was to have an intimate relationship with mankind. Remember, He “walked in the cool of the day” with Adam and Eve in the Garden. His plan was to be with mankind… Where? Right here on earth. But after Adam and Eve sinned…this all changed. God no longer walked with man on this earth. But, that doesn’t change the fact that this was His original intent and design. Do you see that? And in the culmination of time…that is what will take place. God will dwell with mankind on earth…with man. He will come to earth again…just like He did in the Garden…just like He did when He sent His Only Son to pay for that sin debt (initiated on us all by Adam and Eve) and like He will when Jesus comes back and raptures us off the earth. Why? Because He is taking us off the earth so He can burn it…remake it…refurbish it…purify it through fire…so as to bring it back to His original intent. And ultimately, as we’ve just read…He’s coming back and He’ll bring us with Him to rule and reign on this earth for all eternity.
Is the earth special? You better believe it. Should we take of the earth? Yes…we should be good stewards…but, dear friends, it’s all going to burn anyway. Many want to make this earth, “Mother Earth” their god. They worship the earth. We are not to worship the “created,” but instead the Creator. But, the earth is indeed special in God’s creation.
I love the Ken Ham, the founder of Answers in Genesis (www.answersingenesis.org) and the Creation Museum located in northern Kentucky. He articulates very well the argument about the age of the earth. See below:
Why is the age of the earth such a big issue with secular scientists and the media? And why is it that after biblical creationists have written so many books and scientific peer-reviewed papers that contradict the supposed billions of years for the age of the earth/universe, and expose the fallible dating methods devised by man, secularists still scoff?
Well, here’s the bottom line:
For secularists to even postulate the idea of evolution, they have to also postulate an incomprehensible amount of time (billions and billions of years) so that the universe and life might have enough time to evolve. Even with billions of years, though, evolution is impossible. Mathematically and scientifically. But secularists aggressively promote billions of years to make evolution a plausible idea.
The late famed evolutionary biologist, Ernst Mayr said the following:
[The Darwinian] revolution began when it became obvious that the earth was very ancient rather than having been created only 6000 years ago. This finding was the snowball that started the whole avalanche.
For such scientists, it doesn’t matter how good the creationist research is about the age issue. They have already rejected it before considering it. Frankly, they have to, because even allowing the possibility that the earth is only a few thousand years old is tantamount to admitting that evolution is totally wrong. And the alternative? Creation? No, they can’t allow it at all!
Why are biblical creationists so adamant that the earth is young? It’s because we’re zealous for the Bible, and God’s Word clearly indicates that the earth is thousands, not billions, of years old. The only reliable dating method for the age of the earth/universe would come from someone who knew everything, who had always been there, who knows when it started—and then revealed it to us! Of course there is such a ONE—the God of the Bible! The Bible is the only trustworthy dating source. It presents a detailed history from the beginning, about 6,000 years ago. On the AiG website (listed above), there are hundreds of articles that reveal that there is nothing in observational science that contradicts a young earth. In fact, observational science overwhelmingly contradicts an old age.
Let God be true but every man a liar ( Romans 3:4).
Well said Brother Ken! I’m with ya! What I’ve shared in this post are things you may have never heard before. But, don’t let that scare you. What I’ve shared is the Word of God. The problem is (and was for me for years) is that I relied more on what I had been told and taught than what the Word of God actually said. I am now a student of the Bible…
…(albeit a young student with much to learn), but one that is excited about the fact that God (the God of the cosmos…of the universe itself) loves me so much that He wants to spend eternity with me! And He sent His only Son to die for me and rise from the dead to prove it!
Amazing!! Thank you Lord!!
